How to control fear and worry!

The reason I was taught to meditate was to control my mind.  It used to run a mile a minute! Sometimes more than one thought running into and over another as well as never-ending.  Often it was so busy that it kept me from sleep at night.  I started with 5 to 10 minutes a day and now it is normally my practice for one hour a day between 1 and 2 p.m.  While learning to meditate I had a problem with stemmed from a psychological "control issue."

I have to admit now, if someone told me I had such a problem, I would have denied it! It seems that I was afraid to stop thinking for fear that I would not exist.  When I discovered it was I who was thinking, my mind opened to a new understanding.

Researching this, I became aware of the fact that even in Scripture we are told our mind is dualistic. We have that which is called the carnal mind (the ego), and the spiritual mind, (which is truth in us).  By the way, somewhere along your journey you will discover that the carnal mind, or your ego, is what the people 2000 years ago named Satan.  It is that which is written about as the enmity between God and man. (Keep in mind, the ego is illusionary.)  If one were to look, they would find the definition of Satan/devil in the Bible almost identical to that of the dictionary's definition of the ego. Keep that in mind for I will come back to the ego in a minute. But for now I want to explain how to control fear and worry. Both are ridiculous wastes of time and energy.

Let's engage in a little mental exercise which, by doing, will give you an exercise you can do with others to help them.

Guru: Matthew, how old are you?

Matthew: 36

Guru: Go back over those 36 years and find one day whereby you did not have everything you needed; now I said NEEDED, not WANTED.

Matthew: Okay, I remember one.

Guru: Think Matthew, are you actually thinking of something you needed?

Matthew: Well, it was really something I wanted really bad.  I guess I really didn't NEED it.

Guru: So you can see that in truth, we always have what we really need. A lot of people have a huge problem realizing there is a difference. Some people actually believe that anything they really want--they need--and that is NOT true. remember the immortal words, "Know you  the truth and the truth will set you free!"

Guru: Now that takes care of the past, let's look at the future. Both you and I know that you have tentative plans about what you are going to do tomorrow. True or False?

Matthew: True

Guru: Now, you and I also know from experience that when tomorrow comes, at least one, if not six or 12 things, will pop up unexpectedly that you did not plan; true or false?

Matthew: True

Guru: This is wonderful Matthew; look at what you have discovered. That by the end of the day tomorrow, regardless of how many things may pop up that you had not planned on, you will have had what?  You will have had everything you needed and always have had. So you see, fearing what's going to happen or worrying about it is simply a huge waste of time and energy which would be better spent laughing at ourselves!
